Electropolishing & Ra Surface Finish

Surface finish is a purity specification, not an appearance one. A smoother, chromium-rich electropolished surface holds less moisture, sheds fewer particles and dries faster during purge.

Electropolishing versus mechanical polish

Electropolishing removes metal preferentially from surface peaks and leaves a chromium-enriched passive layer. Mechanical polishing can smear the surface and embed abrasive, so it is not a substitute for a true electropolished UHP finish.

Ra and what it does not capture

Ra is an average roughness and is widely quoted, but it says nothing about peaks, valleys or inclusions. Use it alongside cleaning, passivation and particle-count requirements rather than as a single acceptance number.

Moisture and dry-down

Water clings to micro-valleys. A smoother surface reduces the area available for adsorbed moisture, which shortens the purge needed to reach a low dew point after a line is opened for maintenance.

Particle generation

Fewer asperities and inclusions mean fewer sites that can shed particles when a diaphragm cycles. That is why surface finish is specified together with 316L VIM/VAR material.

Verification

Ask for the finishing process, Ra measurement method, cleaning procedure and packaging. A low Ra value on a part that was handled bare and bagged in a normal workshop is not a UHP component.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a low Ra enough to call a valve UHP?

No. Material, cleaning, assembly environment and packaging matter just as much.

Does electropolishing replace passivation?

It produces a chromium-rich passive surface, but a defined cleaning and passivation procedure is still part of a UHP specification.
