Specialty Gas Safety & Material Compatibility
Valve selection on a specialty gas system is part of the safety case. Material compatibility, fail position, purge design and documentation all have to be considered before the first cylinder is connected.
Build a complete gas matrix
List every process, purge, cleaning and calibration gas with concentration, temperature and pressure. Compatibility problems almost always involve a gas that was not on the original list.
Define the safe state
For toxic, pyrophoric and flammable gases, actuated valves should fail closed on loss of air or power. Record how each valve participates in gas detection and emergency shutdown logic.
Prevent reverse migration
Check valves and proper purge/vent sequencing stop a reactive gas from entering a shared header or the purge supply. A single missing check valve can turn a routine cylinder change into a cross-contamination event.
Proof and documentation
Keep material certificates, helium leak records, purge procedures and interlock descriptions together. Audits and incident investigations both start from this documentation set.
Change management
Re-run the compatibility and safe-state review whenever a gas, concentration, tool or panel layout changes. A valve that was correct for the original scope may not be correct for the new one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first document to prepare?
A complete gas matrix covering process, purge, cleaning and calibration gases with concentration and pressure.
Why are check valves a safety item?
They prevent reverse migration of reactive gas into shared purge or vent headers.
